Feasgar math, a h-uile duine.

I am Jeff Justice, and I am currently learning Gàidhlig agus Gaeilge and starting to gain comfort with both. I teach European politics and environmental politics at Tarleton State University. I lead a study-abroad program to Edinburgh in June each year, which has been very successful for our institution. I look forward to interacting with the Gaelic community on the board!

Hallo! Tha mi toilichte a bhith an-seo! Mise Wayne Harbert, agus tha mi nam bhall ùr dhen Bhòrd Stiùiridh. ’Se profeasair cànanachais a th’annam, ann an Oilthigh Cornell ann an Ithaca New York, far a bheil mi a’ teagasg nan seann chànanan Gearmaineach (Gotais, Seann Bheurla, Seann Ghearmailtis, agus mar sin air adhart), cànanachas, eachdraidh a’ Bheurla, tèoraidh a’ cho-chàraidh (syntactic theory), agus, uaireannan, cuid de na cànanan Ceiltich— ‘se sin, Cuimris, Cuimris Mheadhan-aoiseach, agus Gàidhlig. ‘S e a’ Chuimris am prìomh chànan Ceilteach agam. Thòisich mi ri Gàidhlig a h-ionnsachadh ann an 1996, leam fhèin an toiseach, ach fhritheil mi iomadh clas goirid ann an SMO (1997, 2007). Tha dùil agam rim dhreuchd a leigeil dhìom an ath bhliadhna, agus tha mi a’ coimhead air adhart rim chlas Gàidhlig ann an Oilthigh a theagasg an turas mu dheireadh ‘san Earrach 2016, ach ‘san eadar-àm tha na coinneamhan “srupag is còmhradh” againn a’ dol air adhart ann an Newfield (mo dhachaigh) agus Ithaca (m’oifis) gach seachdainn, airson daoine aig a bheil deannan Gàidhlig fhathast. Tha mi a’ coimhead air adhart cuideachd ri pàirt a ghabhal ann an obair chudthromach dhen Chomann.

Hi! I’m glad to be here. I’m Wayne Harbert, and I am a new member of the Governing Board. I am a professor of linguistics at Cornell University in Ithaca NY, where I teach the old Germanic languages (Gothic, Old English, Old High German, and so on), linguistics, history of English, syntactic theory, and, occasionally, some of the Celtic languages –namely, Welsh, Middle Welsh, and Gaelic. Welsh is my main Celtic language. I began to learn Gaelic in 1996, by myself at first, but I attended some short courses at SMO (1997, 2007). I expect that I will retire next year, and I am looking forward to teaching my Gaelic class at the University for the last time in Spring 2016, but in the meantime, our “tea and conversations meetings” go on in Newfield (my home) and Ithaca (my office) each week, for people who have some Gaelic already. I’m also looking forward to participating in the important work of the Society.
